Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IBCLC?

International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants are like the true elite of lactation professionals - they're recognized throughout the world as possessing the only form of standardized, board-certified, international lactation credential available.

What happens at my consultation?

  • Lactation Consultations generally take 1 – 1.5 hours, and it'll be a time for you and your consultant to get to know each other and find out more about your lactation situation. You'll have the appointment in a quiet, comfortable, and private room, and your partner is more than welcome to join you.
  • After getting acquainted, your consultant will go over your health history with you and ask some questions about how birth and breastfeeding have gone so far. They'll then give you a gentle, but comprehensive breast examination, as well as taking a look at your baby's mouth, sucking ability, and overall well-being.
  • At this point, your consultant will weigh your baby – this can help determine how much milk the baby is drawing during the feeding – then observe how you and your baby breastfeed. They'll draw on their expert knowledge to make some gentle suggestions on how to help with positioning, latching, comfort during the feed, switching sides during a feed, burping your baby, and finishing up the feed.
  • Your baby will be weighed before a feeding. If there is concern or question about how much milk your baby transfers from your breast during a feeding, a weight will also be done after the feeding to calculate this amount.
  • Based on this feeding and your past history, you and your lactation consultant will work together to create a written plan that you can follow at home. After a few days of implementing this plan, your consultant will follow up via phone or email and will also provide their contact information so you can reach out if you have questions.

How do I prepare for an appointment?

If possible, it's best to feed your baby about an hour before your appointment - this ensures that they won't be too full to eat, but also won't be too hungry, which may make them frantic. If you've been pumping, feel free to bring your pump and equipment with you, as your consultant can help with your technique and schedule. If you have them, also bring any records related to feedings and numbers of diapers per day.

What does a lactation consultation cost?

Our Lactation Consultations run at $185 for the initial consultation, which will give you a detailed action plan and your own personal consultant to reach out to for support by phone or email. If you and your consultant decide that more time is necessary, follow up consultations are $135. We'll charge you when you book your appointment, and the fee is fully refundable as long as you cancel by the end of the business day before your appointment. If you have to cancel after that, we charge a $50 cancellation fee.

Does my insurance cover lactation consultations?

Insurance companies handle lactation consultations differently, but some companies may reimburse you for consultations. We require fees to be paid at the time of service, but we can provide you with an insurance "superbill" and are happy to help you obtain reimbursement through your insurance.
